What a Wellington website is up against

Wellington is the seat of central and local government and the public sector, wrapped around a dense market of legal and professional services, consulting, and one of the strongest per-capita technology scenes in the country, from SaaS and startups to game studios, film and post-production. Add the hospitality trade around Lambton Quay, Cuba Street and Te Aro, and you have an audience that works close to good design and software all day.

That matters for one practical reason. This market judges a web design agency by the quality and speed of its own work, and it judges your business the same way. A dated or slow site quietly costs you credibility before a buyer reads a single line, and the comparison happens against firms across the CBD, the Hutt Valley and Porirua who are already investing in their own.

The cost is quiet but real. When your site looks behind, reads poorly or loads slowly, the enquiry goes to whichever competitor loaded faster and made the next step clearer. A site built properly turns that same search into a phone call or a form fill.

Where Wellington websites lose work

It looks dated to a design-literate audience

Wellington works around design and software every day. An old site reads as a tell, hinting your work might be behind too, before anyone gets to your offer.

It gets visits but no enquiries

People land, scan, and leave without calling or filling in the form. That is real demand walking out the door to whoever made the next step obvious.

It loads too slowly

Most of your visitors are on a phone, often mid-commute or between meetings. A slow page loses them before it gets the chance to make its case.

You have hit the ceiling of a builder

A drag-and-drop template gets you online, then caps how fast, how findable and how convincing the site can be. You end up paying twice to do it properly.

What you get with a Lucid website

Everything a Wellington business needs in a website that brings in work, not just compliments.

Custom design, no templates

We start from a blank page and build around your brand and how your customers actually buy, so you do not look like every other firm in your category.

Built to convert

Every page carries one job and a clear next step, whether that is a call, a quote request or a sale. Design choices map back to enquiries, not decoration.

Genuinely fast

We tune every build for Core Web Vitals, the metrics Google uses to judge experience. In a market that notices polish, speed is part of the first impression.

SEO handled during the build

Search structure, titles and schema go in as we build, not bolted on afterwards. The site is ready to be found the day it launches.

Mobile-first

We start with the phone and scale up, because Google indexes mobile first and most of your Wellington customers are browsing on a small screen.

A CMS you can run

You get a content system you can update yourself, so changing a price, adding a service or posting an update does not need a developer on standby.

The proof is in the work, not the pitch

A design-literate market wants to see the work before it believes the claim. These are real results for real New Zealand businesses, with every metric tied to the client that earned it. None are Wellington clients, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Professional-services proof, not a local client

We design for the legal and professional-services world

Legal, government and consulting work fills the capital, so the honest question is whether we can build a credible site for that world. We can. We built the website for Indus Legal, a full-service firm of barristers and solicitors, structured around six practice areas: commercial and business law, property, immigration, wills and trusts, family law, and traffic offences, with the named lawyer who handles each matter front and centre.

Indus Legal is an East Auckland firm, not a Wellington client, and we will be straight about that. We do not yet have a Wellington-based client in our portfolio, so we are not going to dress one up. What Indus Legal shows is the thing that matters: we design serious, search-ready sites for the legal and professional-services firms that make up so much of Wellington's economy.

The build was structured around how professional-services clients actually search, looking for one specific need rather than a general firm, with practice-area hubs as the main entry points and dedicated suburb pages underneath. That is the same approach we would bring to a Wellington practice.

How we built it

Practice-area hubs as entry points

Six areas, each with its own detailed pages, named lawyers and relevant questions answered.

Structured for local search

LegalService and LocalBusiness schema across every relevant page, with dedicated suburb pages.

Built on Astro for speed

A fast, clean build that loads quickly and reads clearly on any device.

The right lawyer, found fast

Navigation organised so visitors reach the right practice area and the right person quickly.

Who we build for in Wellington

Our experience maps onto the sectors that drive the capital. Each line below is a verifiable result for a named New Zealand client, shown as proof of capability, not as a Wellington client.

Legal and professional services

We built the site for Indus Legal, an East Auckland law firm, structured around six practice areas and the lawyer who handles each. It is sector proof that we design credible sites for the professional-services world that fills the capital.

Finance and advisory

For Sunshine Mortgages, an Auckland mortgage advisory, we built a bilingual site with four loan calculators and a five-step form that pre-qualifies enquiries before they reach the broker.

Property and rentals

360 Property Management reached #1 on Google for "property management Auckland" on a rebuild that scores 97 on PageSpeed and loads in 1.2 seconds, the kind of work that wins in saturated categories.

Transport and logistics

For GetATaxi, a New Zealand transport company, organic traffic grew 643% from a cold start, with top 10 rankings on airport-transfer terms, the kind of demand a capital and its airport corridor generate.

How a project runs, start to launch

Our Lucid Launch System keeps you in the loop the whole way. You sign off the design before we build, and we test everything before it goes live. We have a process for this.

01

Discovery

We learn your business, your customers and what a win actually looks like. That understanding shapes every decision that follows.

02

Strategy and wireframes

We map how visitors move through the site and what we want them to do on each page, before any visual design starts.

03

Design

You see full mockups and give feedback until the look feels right for your brand. Nothing gets built until you sign them off.

04

Development

We build the approved design as fast, clean, search-ready code, with the content system set up so you can run it yourself.

05

Review and QA

We test across devices and browsers, check page speed and Core Web Vitals, and fix anything that is not right before launch.

06

Launch and support

We handle the technical side of going live, then stay on to help with updates, changes and anything that comes up afterwards.

Why work with Lucid over a big agency, a freelancer or a builder

Traditional agencies make a site look good. We make it work. A polished site with no strategy behind it is expensive art, and a design-literate Wellington buyer can tell the difference between a site that looks busy and one that brings in enquiries.

You can build it yourself on a drag-and-drop builder, and plenty do. But ranking and converting takes SEO and conversion skill most owners do not have the time to learn, and the ceiling on a template arrives sooner than you would like.

And unlike a big agency, senior people do the work here. No account-manager relay, no junior learning on your invoice, no long wait on a one-line change. Our sites are built by an engineer with a Computer Science background, hands-on, which is why speed and clean code are a baseline rather than an upsell.

Senior people, hands-on Strategy then design Accountable after launch

What stays true the whole way

Tied to enquiries

Every design decision maps back to leads and sales, not to vanity metrics.

Tracked, not guessed

We report on what the site actually does once it is live, in plain numbers.

Built by an engineer

Clean, fast code from someone who writes it, not a theme bolted together.

The right platform for your business

There is no single best platform, only the right one for what you need. We build on WordPress, which powers around 42% of the web according to W3Techs and suits most Wellington businesses, on Shopify and WooCommerce for online stores, and on modern frameworks like Astro when speed is the priority.

We built J Tip It and GetATaxi on Astro, and both run fast. J Tip It scores a perfect 100 on Google PageSpeed and lifted organic traffic 150% after the rebuild. In a market that notices how an agency's own work performs, that kind of result does some of the selling for us.

If you already run on a platform you are happy with, we can work with that too. The decision should serve your business for years, so we make it with you rather than for you.

WordPress Shopify and WooCommerce Astro

How we choose

WordPress for content-led sites

When you want to publish and update pages yourself without touching code.

Shopify or WooCommerce for stores

When you are selling products and need a checkout that is built for the job.

Astro when speed wins the job

When raw performance and search rankings are the priority, as with J Tip It and GetATaxi.

What web design costs in Wellington

The honest answer is that it depends on scope. The cost of a website comes down to how many pages it needs, what it has to do, and how much of the content we create for you. A focused brochure site and a large site with ecommerce or bookings are very different jobs.

That is why we do not publish a rate card. After a free discovery call we scope the work and give you a clear, itemised quote, so the investment matches the project rather than a one-size-fits-all package. No surprises, no pressure.

If you are still researching, our guide on what you should pay for web design walks through the real cost drivers in plain terms.
