ChatGPT vs Google Search: What It Means for New Zealand

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles roughly one-fifth as many search-like queries as Google. Adam Fry, who leads ChatGPT’s consumer product, shared the figure around 2 to 3 November 2026. The Verge and Search Engine Journal both reported it, and the fuller conversation was published by Big Technology.

That number is real enough to take seriously. It is also the wrong number for most New Zealand business owners to use when they ask the only question that pays the bills: where do my customers actually find me and click through to my site?

Query volume and website referral traffic are different measures. OpenAI’s one-fifth figure is about how often people ask ChatGPT something that triggers a web search. Ahrefs’ tracker of where websites get visits still shows Google sending far more traffic than ChatGPT. If you mix those two up, you will either panic about Google dying or waste budget chasing a channel that is not sending you customers yet.

What OpenAI Actually Counted

Fry’s definition matters more than the headline ratio.

He said OpenAI counts a search every time a user asks a question that sends ChatGPT to the web. Defining a term or getting a simple how-to that stays inside the model does not count. A conversation can include more than one search. Fry described the category as the kind of question people would previously have taken to a traditional search engine: people, places, things that need up-to-date information, plus finance and health questions.

What he did not publish, according to the coverage:

  • which Google volume figure he compared against
  • the time period for the comparison
  • which regions are included

So “one-fifth of Google” is OpenAI’s internal ratio under OpenAI’s counting rule. It is not an independently audited market-share figure, and it is not a claim that ChatGPT sends one-fifth of Google’s website traffic.

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella said during Google’s 2023 antitrust trial that Bing had about 3 percent of the search engine market after more than a decade of trying. The Verge used that as context for why one-fifth of Google’s query volume is still a striking place for ChatGPT to reach. Striking is not the same as “your Auckland customers have moved”.

What the Referral Data Shows

Search Engine Journal pointed at Ahrefs’ Web Analytics tracker for the other half of the story. Across 118,671 sites in October 2026, Google accounted for 24.74% of tracked traffic and ChatGPT for 0.36%, according to Ahrefs’ AI vs Search benchmark updated on 3 November 2026. All AI assistants combined sat at 0.46% in that same month.

Those percentages are shares of tracked website visits, not shares of questions asked. They answer a different question: when someone ends up on a website, how often did Google send them versus ChatGPT?

Ahrefs also published an earlier estimate in February 2026. In ChatGPT Has 12% of Google’s Search Volume but Google Sends 190x More Traffic to Websites, Patrick Stox started from 2.5 billion daily ChatGPT prompts (from OpenAI and Harvard research covering July 2025) and judged that about 65% were the kind of request people would previously have searched for on Google. Against Google’s publicly cited 5+ trillion annual searches, that put ChatGPT’s search-comparable volume around 12% of Google’s. In that earlier dataset, Google still sent roughly 190 times more website traffic than ChatGPT.

Fry’s newer one-fifth figure and Ahrefs’ earlier ~12% estimate are not a contradiction you need to resolve line by line. They use different methods and different dates. What stays consistent is the gap between “people ask the AI” and “the AI sends visits to websites”.

Google itself has not handed OpenAI a clean public counter-number. Alphabet’s recent earnings commentary, as covered by Search Engine Journal, talks about year-over-year query growth rather than an absolute search count. Sundar Pichai has said AI investments are driving overall search query growth and that Google’s year-over-year query growth rate is the highest in the last five years. That is growth rate language, not a rebuttal of Fry’s ratio.

The Question New Zealand Owners Actually Ask

I hear some version of this from business owners here often enough: “Are people finding businesses like mine in ChatGPT now, or still on Google?”

The honest answer is both, with very different weights.

People are using ChatGPT for research. Fry’s own comments describe users bringing questions they used to take to a search engine. That matches what we see anecdotally when local owners ask friends, staff, or customers how they shortlist a supplier. The assistant is often in the mix.

People are still arriving at websites from Google far more often than from ChatGPT. If your Google Analytics 4 property shows chatgpt.com as a tiny referral source next to google / organic, that is normal in 2026, not proof you are “behind on AI”. It is proof that query activity inside ChatGPT does not automatically become a click to your site.

For a trades business, a clinic, a professional services firm, or an ecommerce store in New Zealand, the practical sequence I still see is:

  1. Someone asks an AI or a person for a shortlist.
  2. They check Google, Maps, reviews, and the website.
  3. They contact the business that looks clear, local, and trustworthy.

We made that argument with data in what actually gets you cited in AI search. Consumer trust research presented at SMX Advanced found buyers checked an average of 2.4 platforms before validating a purchase, and trust in Google still sat well above trust in AI tools in that research. This post is not repeating that citation playbook. It is about not misreading OpenAI’s volume claim as a traffic claim.

Two Metrics, Two Decisions

Keep these on separate lines in any report you show a client or yourself.

Metric A: search-like query volume. How often people ask ChatGPT (or Google) a question. OpenAI’s one-fifth figure lives here. You cannot see OpenAI’s internal number for your brand. You can only treat the public ratio as industry context.

Metric B: referral traffic and leads. How often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google send a visit, enquiry, or sale. This is the number in your analytics and CRM. Ahrefs’ 24.74% vs 0.36% split is a market-level version of Metric B.

Channel plans should lead with Metric B. Metric A tells you the conversation is shifting. Metric B tells you whether that shift is paying you yet.

If Metric B from AI assistants is tiny, do not rebuild your whole acquisition plan around ChatGPT. Keep doing the work that earns Google clicks and makes you easy to verify when someone checks after an AI answer. If Metric B is growing, invest in the pages and proof those visitors need, and track them properly.

What I Would Check in Your Analytics This Week

A short, concrete pass:

  1. In GA4, open Traffic acquisition and look for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, and copilot.microsoft.com. Note sessions, not vibes.
  2. Compare those sessions to google / organic over the same period. Write the ratio down. That is your account’s version of the Ahrefs gap.
  3. Check whether AI referrals convert. A small stream of visits that book calls can matter more than a large stream that bounces. A large stream that never enquires is a curiosity, not a channel.
  4. Search your brand and your top service queries in ChatGPT (with browsing on) and in Google. Note whether you appear, how you are described, and what a stranger would do next. This is qualitative. Pair it with the analytics numbers.
  5. Do not stop measuring Google. Alphabet is still reporting strong query growth. Abandoning SEO because ChatGPT’s query volume is rising would be cutting the larger referral channel to chase the smaller one.

The how-to for becoming the source AI systems cite lives in our AI SEO, GEO and AEO guide. Use that when you are ready to improve the pages. Use this post when someone waves the one-fifth headline at you in a meeting.

The Opinion Most Agencies Will Soften

I would not let an OpenAI volume claim set your 2026 budget.

Vendors and commentators will translate “ChatGPT is 20% of Google’s search volume” into “move 20% of your SEO budget into AI search.” That leap skips the referral data. On Ahrefs’ October tracker, ChatGPT’s share of tracked website traffic was 0.36%, not 20%. Even allowing for undercounted referrals (some AI links strip referrer data and can look like direct traffic), the order of magnitude is not close.

Spend on AI visibility where you can measure visits and leads. Keep the core of the budget on the channel that still sends the customers. For most small businesses we work with in New Zealand, that is still Google Search, Google Maps, and a website that converts the click.

Frequently Asked Questions

OpenAI says ChatGPT’s search-like query volume is about one-fifth of Google’s, counting each question that triggers a web search. Fry did not publish the Google baseline, the date range, or the regional scope. Treat it as OpenAI’s figure under OpenAI’s definition, not as audited market share.

Does That Mean ChatGPT Sends One-Fifth of Google’s Website Traffic?

No. Ahrefs’ October 2026 tracker across 118,671 sites put Google at 24.74% of tracked traffic and ChatGPT at 0.36%. Query volume inside ChatGPT and referral traffic to websites are different measures.

Should New Zealand Businesses Shift Budget From Google SEO to ChatGPT?

Not on the strength of the volume claim alone. Check your own AI referral traffic and conversions first. If those numbers are small, improve the fundamentals that help you on Google and in AI answers, and keep Google as the primary measured channel until the referral data changes.

How Do I Track ChatGPT Visits?

In GA4, look at session source and medium for chatgpt.com and other AI hosts. Some visits may appear as direct if the referrer is stripped, so treat the AI referral total as a lower bound. Pair it with conversion events so you know whether those visits enquire.

Is Google Search Shrinking Because of ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s ratio does not prove displacement on its own. Alphabet has separately said Google’s year-over-year query growth rate is the highest in five years. People can use both. Many already do.

Where This Leaves You

When someone quotes the one-fifth figure this month, ask which measure they mean. If they mean queries asked inside ChatGPT, OpenAI’s claim is the source to cite. If they mean customers arriving on your website, look at Ahrefs’ market data and your own GA4. For most owners here, Google is still the visit engine, and ChatGPT is a growing research layer that only sometimes sends the click.

If you want help reading your AI and Google traffic side by side, and deciding what is worth fixing first, book a strategy call. Bring the last 90 days of GA4 acquisition data if you have it. The useful conversation starts with your numbers, not OpenAI’s ratio.
