The Challenge
PlastiCard manufactures and delivers custom ID cards for schools, gyms, workplaces, and event organisers across New Zealand, and its mobile app is the primary channel customers use to capture ID photos and submit card orders. The existing app ran on React Native 0.
64 with deprecated native modules, and Apple had flagged it as incompatible with upcoming iOS 26 APIs. With outdated dependencies and unmaintained bridging modules, a full rebuild was the cleaner path than an incremental patch.
The goal was to bring the app onto a modern, sustainable stack and keep it compatible with iOS 26, while keeping the photo capture and ordering flow identical for the thousands of customers who rely on it every day.
Our Solution
- Rebuilt the app on the latest React Native version with a modernised native stack and a refreshed TypeScript codebase built to last for years.
- Rewrote the photo capture flow on the new native camera APIs, adding improved cropping, lighting detection, and background removal.
- Redesigned the order management screens for clarity while keeping the steps customers already knew unchanged.
- Implemented secure token-based authentication and integrated with the existing order backend via REST.
- Ran the new app in parallel against the old one during testing to confirm feature parity, then rolled it out with zero downtime and full iOS 26 compatibility.
