Challenge
The Compton Cowboys are a collective of seven cowboys and one cowgirl from Compton, California, who use horsemanship to uplift inner-city youth and reframe narratives about their community. Rooted in a local horse program founded in 1988 and carried on for more than 30 years, the crew is known for documentary features, brand partnerships, and museum exhibitions.
They wanted a digital home that matched the cultural weight of the brand rather than a generic non-profit template. The site needed to carry long-form storytelling, merchandise, events, and a press archive while staying fast for the mobile networks their community relies on.
02
Approach
Designed a bold editorial layout that leads with photography and long-form narrative over boilerplate non-profit copy. Structured the architecture around the origin story, youth programming, a merchandise storefront, event listings, and a press archive.
Built the site on Astro with a static-first approach for near-instant loads on any connection, including slow mobile networks. Wired a CMS so the team can publish new stories and merch drops without touching code.
Connected donation, newsletter signup, and contact paths so supporters can engage from any page.
