# AI SEO for New Zealand businesses: get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI

Source: https://www.lucidmedia.co.nz/services/search-engine-optimisation/ai-seo/

AI search optimisation at Lucid Media (often called GEO or AEO) is the work of making your business easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews to find, describe correctly and quote. For businesses across New Zealand, we start by asking those tools about you, fix what on your site leads them to get you wrong or leave you out, then, for monthly clients, ask the same questions again every month.

## What AI tools say about you today

Before we change anything, we ask the AI tools about you. That record is the baseline every later month is compared against.

1. 01

   ### Your buyer questions

Your business name, plus a list of the questions your buyers ask, agreed with you.

2. 02

   ### Asked in four AI tools

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot.

3. 03

   ### Every answer saved

We save a dated screenshot of every answer.

4. 04

   ### What each answer says

Whether you are named, whether you are described correctly, and who is named instead.

5. 05

   ### Same list every month

We rerun the same list in the same tools each month, so each comparison is like for like.

### What we record

From every answer, and from your site.

- Described correctly, and current

Whether the answer gets your business right, with information that is up to date.

- Competitors named instead

Which businesses the tool names when it doesn’t name you.

- The websites it draws on

Which sites the tools cite. Those sources become the target list for later months.

- AI crawlers blocked on your site

We check your robots.txt for AI crawlers that are blocked, including wildcard rules that block them by accident.

## What we change on your site in the setup

The setup list, in the order we work through it. Where a step needs something from your side, it ends with "From you".

1. ### Crawler access, agreed with you

We agree which AI crawlers to allow, record that decision, update your robots.txt and check it in Search Console. From you: the allow or block decision.

2. ### An llms.txt file, from approved facts

An llms.txt and llms-full.txt at your site root, covering your services, areas and contact details, written only from facts you have approved. From you: sign-off on the facts and any figures.

3. ### Structured data that labels who you are

Organization schema on your homepage, FAQPage where a page has FAQs, Article with author and dates on every post, and LocalBusiness if you serve a local area. All of it validated, with errors fixed. It labels who you are and what each page is. It is not a ranking lever.

4. ### The openings of your top 10 pages

The first 200 words of each say what the page is, who you are, what you do and where, and give a plain definition worth quoting.

5. ### FAQs on every service page

At least five questions your buyers actually ask on each service page, each answer complete on its own.

6. ### Who you are, the same everywhere

Author pages with Person schema, an About page with your real credentials, and the same name, address and phone across your site, Google Business Profile, socials and directories. From you: the credentials, awards and press that are real.

## How a page is rewritten to be quoted

The most visible part of the work is how a page opens. Here is the opening of this page, checked against the same five things we check on yours.

The opening of this page

AI search optimisation (marker 1) at Lucid Media (marker 2) (often called GEO or AEO (marker 3)) is the work of making your business easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews to find, describe correctly and quote (marker 4). For businesses across New Zealand (marker 5), we start by asking those tools about you, fix what on your site leads them to get you wrong or leave you out, then, for monthly clients, ask the same questions again every month.

### The five things in the first 200 words

1. Marker 1: What the page is

Said in the first words, in the terms people search for.

2. Marker 2: Your business name

So an answer that quotes the page also names you.

3. Marker 3: Your service terms

Including the other names buyers use for the same thing.

4. Marker 4: A plain definition

One sentence that still makes sense when it is quoted on its own.

5. Marker 5: Where you work

The location, for any business that serves an area.

### Through the rest of the page

- Short paragraphs, real headings

Proper H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, and lists where a list is clearer.

- The answer first

Each key section opens with the answer, then explains.

- Every number has a source

A named source, or your own verified result used with your permission, checked before it goes live.

## What happens every month

The setup is the start. These are the jobs that repeat every month for clients on a monthly AI search engagement.

1. 01

   ### The same questions, asked again

We rerun the same buyer questions in the same AI tools, save dated screenshots, and note what changed in who gets named and whether you are described accurately.

2. 02

   ### The sources AI tools already use

We work through a shortlist of third-party sources the AI tools already draw on, such as directories, curated lists and industry publications, and keep your business details consistent across them.

3. 03

   ### Answers for the questions you are missing from

Where the AI answers to a buyer question don’t name you, we add FAQ content that answers it.

4. 04

   ### AI referral visits checked

We check the visits that came from AI tools in Google Analytics, in a report set up for it.

## How we measure AI visibility

Nobody controls what an AI tool says, so we don’t promise a citation. What we can do is measure the same things the same way every month, and record the date of each check.

There is no standard score for this, and we don’t invent one.

### What we measure

1. 01

Dated answers to the same questions

Dated screenshots from the baseline and every monthly rerun, compared like for like: who was named, and how you were described.

2. 02

AI visits as their own channel

We set up a channel group in Google Analytics so visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot show as their own channel, with a saved report for them.

3. 03

   Google’s own AI report

Search Console’s generative AI report shows how often your pages appear in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts appearances, not clicks.

## We do it on our own site first

We run the structured data, author and definition work on our own site first, and you can open each of these pages and check it.

- [Lucid Media at a glance](https://www.lucidmedia.co.nz/about/lucid-media-at-a-glance/)
- [Author page: Jason Poonia](https://www.lucidmedia.co.nz/about/jason-poonia/)
- [The glossary](https://www.lucidmedia.co.nz/glossary/)

- Structured data from one source

Our site generates its Organization, Person, LocalBusiness, FAQ, Article and Service schema from one shared utility.

- An author page and a plain-fact page

An author page with Person schema, and a page of plain facts about the business for readers and AI tools that arrive with no context.

- A glossary built for definitions

Each term has its own page with DefinedTerm markup, and our comparison pages set the options side by side.

## What we will not sell you

Plenty gets sold as AI search work that Google’s own documentation says you don’t need. Here is how we handle each one.

Sources, checked October 2026

- [Google Search Central: optimising for generative AI search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)
- [Google Search Central: changes to HowTo and FAQ rich results](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/08/howto-faq-changes)

- What gets sold

An llms.txt file, sold as a project

What the sources say, and what we do

Google Search ignores it, so it neither helps nor harms you there. We include one in setup, never sold on its own.

- What gets sold

Breaking your pages into fragments for AI

What the sources say, and what we do

Google says there is no requirement to. We write clear sections.

- What gets sold

FAQ or HowTo markup, sold for extra space in Google

What the sources say, and what we do

Since 2023, FAQ results show only for well-known government and health sites, and HowTo results are gone.

- What gets sold

Schema sold as the key to AI search

What the sources say, and what we do

Google says it isn’t required for its AI search. We use it to label who you are.

- What gets sold

  A promised citation or ranking

What the sources say, and what we do

Nobody controls what AI tools say. We commit to the work and the measurement.

## Built into the websites we build

Our website builds now include schema and a sitemap as part of the standard SEO setup, with an llms.txt file alongside. Each of these four builds shipped with schema.

## AI SEO FAQ

The questions New Zealand business owners and marketing leads ask on the first AI SEO call.

[Ask a Question](https://www.lucidmedia.co.nz/contact/)

**Is AI SEO the same as regular SEO?**

No, but it sits on top of it. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so the SEO foundations still matter. AI SEO adds the work aimed at the answer itself: checking what the tools say about you, making your pages easy to quote accurately, keeping your business details the same everywhere, and measuring whether you get named. The goal moves from "position 1" to "named and described correctly in the answer".

**Can you actually rank in ChatGPT or Perplexity?**

Not the way you rank in Google. When these tools search the web, they read a set of pages and write an answer from them, often naming a few businesses. The work is to make your pages the kind they can quote with confidence: a clear opening that says who you are and what you do, answers to the questions buyers actually ask, real sources for every number, and the same business details across your site and the directories they read. Nobody controls what an AI tool says, so we measure whether you are named rather than promise it.

**Will AI Overviews replace Google search?**

Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so the SEO foundations still matter. Search Console's generative AI report now shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, so you can see your own exposure rather than guess.

**Is llms.txt actually worth implementing?**

Not as a project on its own. Google's own guidance says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so creating one neither helps nor harms you there. We include an llms.txt file as a small part of setup, written only from facts you have approved, and we never sell it on its own. If someone is quoting you a large fee for "llms.txt implementation", ask what it does that Google says it does not.

**How long until AI SEO results show up?**

We can't give you a date, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The setup changes (crawler access, structured data, page openings, FAQs and consistent business details) are made at the start. Whether and when the AI tools then name you depends on them, not us. What we can tell you is what changed: every month we ask the same questions in the same tools, save dated screenshots, and check AI referral visits in Google Analytics, and appearances in Search Console's generative AI report.

**Do I need to redesign my site for AI search?**

Almost never. The work is mostly page openings, FAQs, structured data and consistent business details on the site you already have. A rebuild is only worth discussing if your content is hard for any crawler to read, for example if the words on key pages are drawn by JavaScript rather than sitting in the HTML, or the navigation is inaccessible. In that case the fix helps SEO and AI search at the same time. Usually this is work on the existing site, not a rebuild.

**What proof do you have that any of this works?**

Our own site carries the structured data, author page, plain-fact page and glossary described above, and you can check them: the structured data comes from one shared source, the author page carries Person schema, and each glossary term has its own page. Our website builds now include schema and a sitemap as part of the standard SEO setup, and the case studies on this page show four of them. We don't promise a citation, because nobody controls what an AI tool says. We record a baseline before we start and compare against it every month.

## Ready to see what AI tools say about you?

Tell us about your business and the questions your buyers ask. We'll check how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and Copilot answer them today, look at whether your site lets AI crawlers in, and come back with a short list of what to fix first.
